Kiffin Era Begins With Scandal On His Way Out Door

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

ESPN’s Chris Low is reporting that it didn’t take long for Lane Kiffin to kick dirt in the face of his former employer, the University of Tennessee.  After being done a huge favor by the Vols after his tumultuous tenure at the Oakland Raiders, Kiffin held a press conference announcing his resignation.  Apparently Kiffin had his top assistant and head of recruiting, Ed Orgeron, contact Tennessee recruits to encourage them to come to USC.  Orgeron will be joining the USC staff under Kiffin.

Based on the report from ESPN’s Low, Tennessee defensive lineman Marlon Walls overheard Orgeron making calls to incoming freshman recruits, pitching the players on coming to USC and not finalizing enrollment at the university.  Specifically, Orgeron has been accused of tell the incoming recruits that if they attend class, your ability to transfer and play for USC becomes more difficult.  Tennessee official responded by turning off Orgeron’s university-issued cell phone and provided Kiffin a police-assisted escort off the campus.

Orgeron's Behavior Demand New Rules

Orgeron's Behavior Demand New Rules

The behavior brings forward serious issues with NCAA rules and it calls for changes.  The Presidents and Athletic Directors of various universities have spit in the face of the governing body with their aggressive actions to steal coaches from other universities without repercussions.  And with this, the lives of teenagers are being tremendously affected by the greed and lack of sportsmanship displayed by these actions.

While a university should be able to go out and seek the best coach possible for their program, such activity needs to be done with professionalism.  In December, Notre Dame hired away Brian Kelly from Cincinnati in the middle of an undefeated football season.  Cincinnati then responded by hiring Central Michigan’s head coach before their bowl game.

Where do we set the line that shouldn’t be crossed?

Kiffin and Orgeron just showed the NCAA where the line should be set.  If Orgeron’s action had been conducted in the business world, he would be getting sued for tortuous interference of contractual duties.  When you are a business executive leaving, you legally can’t intentionally hurt your former employer on the way out the door.

In the instance here with Orgeron, they found the loophole in the NCAA rules that needs to be closed.  Many football recruits, the blue-chippers, have begun a process of graduating early from high school by taking community college courses and summer classes to graduate in December.  This allows the recruit to enroll during the spring semester and be available for Spring practice.

To ensure this never happens again, the NCAA rules change needed is simple.  First, require that any student that participates in Spring football practice must be starting their second semester at the school.  Second, once a player provides an oral commitment to a university, any departing coach involved in that player’s recruitment is barred from making contact.  If the player wants to follow the coach, they must forfeit one year’s eligibility.

The NCAA needs to get this back to a student athlete signing on with the university, not the coach.

Lane Kiffin Bolts Rocky Top for USC

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Its tough to surprise the average sports fan these days when it comes to Lane Kiffin.  From getting fired for cause by the Oakland Raiders to being accused of sending pretty girls in to lead his recruiting efforts, ESPN is reporting that Kiffin has resigned as head coach for the Tennessee Volunteers to take the same position at USC.   Kiffin’s hiring comes quickly after the announcement that Pete Carroll had stepped down to take the head coach position with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

Kiffin Leaves USC After One Season

Kiffin Leaves USC After One Season

Kiffin’s only season at Tennessee was a tumultuous one.  During his stay, he publically accused Florida coach Urban Meyer of NCAA recruiting violations, was officially reprimanded by the SEC, accused Georgia of cheating on a radio show and told a South Carolina recruit that he would be pumping gas after his playing days were over.  Additionally, Kiffin’s involvement with an on-campus girl booster’s club was questioned and he caused the university to be probed for an NCAA secondary violation for bringing a former student of St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) along on a recruiting trip to his former high school alma mater.

You wonder who is more happier about the new job, USC or Tennessee?

Kiffin takes over a program that is on life support due constant NCAA probes, a departing coach and a handful of early departures by underclassmen.  Kiffin will have his hands full with a program that looks to be heading towards probation as a result of the latest NCAA violation drama surrounding star running back Joe McKnight.

Given all the problems at USC, Kiffin seems like a poor choice given his penchant for being a loose cannon.  While he may understand the university and its approach to fielding a top-notch squad, Kiffin has failed to show the leadership skills in his two overnight stays as a head coach.

Next question is, will his Daddy be joining him sunny Southern California to keep him grounded?

Pete Carroll Should Of Stayed At USC

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Pete Carroll has just taken the job as had coach for the Seattle Seahawks. I think that he should of stayed at USC for more than a couple of reasons…

Pete Carroll is a college coach plain and simple. His high energy motivational techniques works in sync with the college football athlete. Young and impressional  student athletes embrace a great college coach like Carroll ,and his success speaks for itself. I love college football and coaches like him bring a tradition unmatched in any sport today.USC will sorely miss Pete ,and I think Pete will sorely miss SC when he gets a taste of the pro athlete. Coaching pro athletes is tough because are more individualistic in nature and tend to get inflated egos due to the the money they are making. Coaching college football is more about unity, team and tradition. He had a dream job to me and leaving the school is a big mistake.

I don't think Pete Carroll will be smiling after his stint in Seattle.

I don't think Pete Carroll will be smiling after his stint in Seattle.

Carroll not only was a great motivator of young college minds but was very successful as well.He won two National Championships in his 9 year tenor as coach. He turned out countless All-Americans and NFL draft picks. He also coached three Heisman Trophy winners and had a astounding 97-18 record at SC. His teams finished seven consecutive seasons in the AP top four. You cannot do any better than Carroll in a nine year time frame as head coach. He thrived in the College game, The game needs him and SC needs him. His lost will be felt by all college football fans.

As I have stated previously this article, I think it is a big mistake for Pete Carrol to jump ship to the NFL. He will never get the satisfaction, pride and success that he enjoyed at USC in Seattle. I think he also did his recruits a dishonor by leaving them high and dry. Lets face it, Players come to school for the coaches. I wonder how Carroll feels about that. I would not want to try to coach and motivate the modern spoiled athlete. Carroll left possibly one the best jobs in the world to coach these types of players. And by the way, it is not like The Seahawks have tasted to much success lately. Case rested, you should of stayed in Southern California, Petey.

Texas’ Colt McCoy Sinks Longhorns When It Counts Most

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Colt McCoy came to Austin with much fanfare.  He was the Texas boy that chose to stay home and put on the burnt orange.  He was to carry on the legacy of quarterbacking success under Mack Brown. He was supposed to bring another national championship just as his predecessor Vince Young.  Last night in Pasadena, that storybook ending got short-circuited.

Injuries Follow McCoy's Losses

Injuries Follow McCoy's Losses

While McCoy ends his career as the winningest quarterback in NCAA history, he will be remembered most for his losses.  Oddly, most of those losses included injuries to McCoy.

During his freshman year, McCoy suffered a “stinger” in his shoulder during a huge upset loss to Kansas State.  Later that season during a deplorable showing against A&M, he bowed out late with another “stinger”, this time to his neck.  In 2007, McCoy was injured again in another huge blowout upset loss to Kansas State at home.  This time a reported concussion and pain in his arm.  McCoy returned as the wounded lion the following week with his bicep bandaged up in a loss to Oklahoma.

McCoy just always seemed to get injured when the chips were on the line.

Then last night, another big game.  Another major obstacle in front of him.  A chance for glory.  Another injury.  This one cost his team the BCS.

While I want to believe the wonderful “pushed out” press release stories of what happened in that locker room in Pasadena last night, as beautifully detailed by Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel, I was always taught not to buy into fairytales.  The reality is that Colt McCoy started in another big game and he went down with another injury that cannot be detected by a medical physician.  The “stinger” is really the only injury you can fake.  Its an injury that is based on the word of the player.

Now I am not here to call out McCoy as a faker.  He very well may have been truly injured each of these times.  The motive here is to point out that when pressure game situations arose, it was these games where McCoy had a penchant for injury.  It may just be coincidence, but it has to be noted.

Only Colt McCoy knows for sure.

One thing everyone can agree on is that if that quarterback last night for the Texas Longhorns was Tim Tebow, we wouldn’t be hearing excuses that Texas lost because McCoy got knocked out of the game.  Tebow would have re-entered that game, no matter what condition he was in.  It would have taken armed security to remove him from the field.

Regardless if McCoy re-entered the game, there would have been very little difference in the result on the scoreboard.  The Alabama defensive line penetrated holes through that swiss cheese Texas offensive line with relative ease.  McCoy’s stat line would have looked very similar to what Garrett Gilbert put up on the board.

Texas has much to thank Nick Saban for his conservative play-calling.  A 17-point bullying could have easily been a 40 point blowout if Alabam decided to unleash that offense.

Crimson Tide Capture BCS Championship

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Alabama capped off a undefeated 14-0 season by defeating Texas 37-21 to capture the BCS National Championship. Bama was a unanimous number 1 in the AP Polls. They were lead by their Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram and got a little help from a arm that went dead.

Alabama weathered the storm of a couple of early mistakes amd kept the damage minimal.  Bama went for a fake punt on their first possession when it was fourth and long.  Texas could not take full advantage of this and had to settle for a field goal. To make matters worst, Texas lost their star quarterback Colt McCoy to a dead arm. It was a hit that he has taken many times but for some reason the hit made his arm have no feeling.  There was no pain.

mark-ingramYou could see from here that it was not going to be Texas night.  From there Texas got another break after they kicked off, and Alabama did not cover the kick.  Texas had another opportunity to get six but had to settle for another field goal to make it 6-0. Texas walked away wanting more, and Bama showed why they are the Champs by squashing any real momentum early in the game.

The second quarter was Bama’s quarter.  They outscored Texas 24-0. Ingram and fellow running back Trent Richardson got the running game going, and the Tide was rolling. They both scored rushing touchdowns, then they added a field goal.  It looked like it was going to be 17-6 headed to the half.

But that is when Bama’s defense came up big again. Texas attempted a shovel pass that turned into disaster.  The pass was picked off by Bama’ s defensive linemen Marcell Dareus for a 28 yard touchdown with only three seconds left. He broke two tackles and Texas had to be demoralized.

I have to give Texas credit as they came out in the second half and scored two touchdowns to make the game 24-21 with about three minutes left.  It is a credit to coach Mack Brown to keep his team up considering what happen in the first half. But it was Bama’s defense that came up big yet again.

Bama forced a fumble deep in Texas territory and covered it on the three yard line.  Ingram then bulled his was to a three yard touchdown.  Then Bama got another interception, and Richardson capped off the scoring with a two yard run.Bama’s defense held Texas to only 276 total yards when they averaged about 440 per game.

Ingram ended up with 116 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.  He was offensive game MVP.  Trent Richardson was also great as he rushed for 109 yards and two scored also.  Bama won with a total team effort on both sides of the ball.  Nick Saban had these kids buy in to all his philosophies , and it paid off.

Congratulations Crimson Tide.

Longhorns Blowout Loss Will Bring Cries For Playoff

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Let’s face it, the BCS system is broken.

The Texas Longhorns are one of the most undeserving championship game combatants in some time.  That is quite a great feat considering how often Oklahoma and Ohio State have crashed the party in recent years.  Tonight’s game will be a mismatch of great proportions and it will serve as a final statement as to why NCAA football needs a playoff system.

Texas Taints The Title

Texas Taints The Title

Texas got this opportunity simply because of their preseason ranking, not due to the quality of the football results on the field.  Texas began the season pre-ranked #2 in the polls and ended in the same spot.  Texas got beat by Nebraska, no matter what it said on the scoreboard, but the pollsters and computer rankings didn’t apply the reality we all saw on the field.

In contrast, Boise State, TCU and Cincinnati had to claw their way forward after being dismissed in the early polls.   Each of those team’s were more deserving of tonight’s matchup, as much the same for the Florida Gators.   You have to cut Cincinnati some slack on their loss, as they were reeling from their coach being stolen by Notre Dame, but the other three teams displayed championship quality football on the field in their bowl games.

A playoff is needed to ensure that the best two teams make it into the final game.  This not just for the fans, its for the players that are leaving it all out on the field.  When Alabama celebrates another national championship tonight, their title will be diminished because they never played Boise State.  The kids at both schools deserve better than how the NCAA is treating them.

Will The Tide Roll To A BCS Title?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

The BCS Championship game tonight pits two undefeated teams in the Rose Bowl. Texas will take on Alabama with the winner to be crowned National Champion.  Both teams have star players and two of the best coaches in college football.

Alabama is lead by their Heisman trophy winner, Mark Ingram.  Ingram leads a rushing attack that averaged 215.9 yards per game, good for 12th in the nation.  It will be vital to establish this ground attack so they can set up their passing game and keep the Texas defense on the defense.  Balance will be a key to victory.  Alabama will also need too pressure Texas quarterback Colt McCoy.  They have been susceptible to the big play this year.  McCoy can come up with the big play and Bama better keep those plays to a minimum.

Nick Saban will have Alabama fired up in tonights BCS Championahip game vs. Texas.

Nick Saban will have Alabama fired up in tonights BCS Championahip game vs. Texas.

The Crimson Tide also sport one the best coaches in the nation in Nick Saban.  Saban seems to squeeze the most out of his players and will have this team both prepared and motivated.  He has had time since Bama’s big SEC Championship win over Florida.  Saban will also use that momentum to keep the tide rolling.  If this game comes down to a the kicking game, Bama will fair well.  Leigh Tiffin kicked 29/33 field goals this year. Bama will hope this game will not be that close.

Texas is led by their great quarterback Colt McCoy.  McCoy finished third in the Heisman balloting to Ingram. He could use this as motivation to out play Ingram and Alabama tonight.  McCoy must manage this game smartly and limit his mistakes against a opportunistic Alabama defense.  Texas cannot afford to make mistakes, it is that easy.  Texas also sports the #1 rushing defense in the nation, only giving up a poultry 62.2 yards per game.  If they can bring that kind of defense tonight against Bama’s vaunted rushing offense, they will wind up National Champions.

Texas also has a great coach in Mack Brown. Brown has already won a National Championship at Texas and would like nothing better than to add a second.  Texas might also be a team of destiny.  They pulled out a 13-12 victory over Nebraska in the Big Eight Championship when there was one second added to the clock.  They then used that one second to their advantage as their place kicker Hunter Lawrence kicked a game winning field goal.  Lawrence is a stellar kicker converting 22/25 field goals this year.

I think that the Tide is too balanced and too good for the Longhorns.  Bama has everything working for them including talent, coaching and momentum.  I think the tide will roll to the National Championship.

Yellow Jackets Hope To Taste Orange Tonight

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010
Josh Nesbitt will hope to taste victory in the Orange Bowl.

Josh Nesbitt will hope to taste victory in the Orange Bowl.

Tonights Orange Bowl had a intriguing match up between a very good offense team in Georgia Tech and a equally good as well defensive team in the Iowa Hawkeyes. The contrasting strengths between these two teams should provide excitement and a very competitive contest.

Georgia Tech (11-2) is  ninth ranked and champions of the ACC. They defeated Clemson 39-34 to claim the title. They have a very diverse offense. It has been described as a spread option offense that features formations like the flexbone and wishbone. They have a outstanding running game lead by their great running back Jonathan Dwyer. All Dwyer did this year is amass   1346 yards on the ground to go with 14 touchdowns. He is explosive and has home run hitting ability. If he was not enough to handle, Josh Nesbitt, Tech’s QB can hit the ground running also. Nesbitt ran for 991 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also passed for ten touchdowns to. Tech is 11th in total offense with 442 yards per game. 307 of them came via the ground. With their diversified attack and talent, there are one tough offense to defend.

Iowa on the other hand supports a very stingy defense. There defense is good enough to stop Tech, but they will need to be at their best to accomplish that feat. Iowa (10-2) and tenth ranked only gave up 286 yards per game this year. Only 122 of those yards came on the ground. In addition they only gave up 15.5 points per game, stingy indeed. The offense is lead by experienced quarterback Ricky Stanzi. Stanzi missed the final two regular season games a;27-24 overtime loss to Big Ten Champion Ohio State and a 12-0 shutout win over Minnesota. Stanzi is a winner and was 9-0 as a starter this year. He will have to use his leadership to lead Iowa to a victory. He will need to  keep his offense on the field and Tech’s offense off it. He must Manage.

Lets see tonight if the vaunted and diversified Tech offense can be stopped by the immovable object, the Hawkeye defense.

Battle of Unbeatens:TCU vs Boise State

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Tonights Fiesta Bowl features a battle of two undefeated teams. Boise St. (13-0) will play TCU (12-0) . One of the teams will remain unbeaten and bring to the forefront the question on whether there should be a college playoff.

This game pits Boise States offense vs. TCU’s defense. Boise is sixth ranked and averages a nations best 44.2 points per game. They put up over 460 total yards per game. Their wins include a win over PAC 10 champion Oregon. TCU’s defense will get their best test tonight for sure. Boise beat Oklahoma a few years back, so people do take them seriously already. A win tonight would solidify their quest to be mentioned among the elite in college football.

Gary Patterson will hope to stay uinbeaten after tonights Fiesta Bowl.

Gary Patterson will hope TCU stays unbeaten after tonights Fiesta Bowl.

TCU,3rd ranked, comes into this contest with the 4th rated defense in the nation only giving up 12.4 points per game. They, like Boise, have averaged over 460 yards a game on offense. TCU has defense and offense. They can beat you both ways and would be dangerous to any team anytime. They have victories at Clemson and blowouts over Utah and BYU. I think TCU could have a good shot at knocking off Alabama or Texas. But unfortunately they will never get the chance. No PLAYOFF.

I think that this game will be won by the more balanced team, TCU. They have the defense to keep Boise’s offense in check and will score enough points on offense to get the victory. Maybe after TCU wins tonight, they will seriously examine the chances of a College. Football Playoff.  As a passionate college football fan, I can only hope so.

Red Raiders Hope To Put Mike Leach’s Dismissal Behind Them In Alamo Bowl

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Texas Tech is playing tonights Alamo Bowl against Michigan State with a distraction they did not see coming.

Texas tech will hope to win without Mike Leach tonight in the Alamo Bowl.

Texas tech will hope to win without Mike Leach tonight in the Alamo Bowl.

They are playing this football game under the dark cloud created by their former head coach Mike Leach.

Leach was let go on Wednesday,  because he took the university to court to try to turnover a suspension for his conduct to current player Adam James. It is alleged that Leach mistreated him when he was injured. I always though as Leach as being the “Bobby Knight” of college football. He is friends with Knight ,and it looks he acts with the same demeanor as him towards his players. There is no room in college athletics for coaches who push their players too hard. After all, it is suppose to be fun and it is just a game.

Ruffin McNeill will take over the duties tonight and it will be interesting how the Red Raiders will respond. I think they will respond brilliantly ,and McNeill will take full advantage ot this situation and show the university that he would like to be the permanent coach at Texas Tech.

Texas Tech (8-4)  has a vaunted passing attack that ranks second in the nation in passing yards with 4568 on the season. They also rank 9th in the nation in scoring 36.7 points per game. They have used three quarterbacks this season. They will pass early and often. The Spartans defense will have their hands full all night.

Michigan State (6-6) has some turmoil to deal with as well. They had 11 players suspended on November 22nd because of a dormitory  brawl. They have one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten in Kirk Cousins. Cousins will have a uphill battle to pull out a victory tonight. State will hope the head coach distraction will play in their favor to offset the suspensions.

I hope Texas Tech comes up big tonight. I would love for Mike Leach to get some more pie in his face.  Go Red Raiders.
