Texas’ Colt McCoy Sinks Longhorns When It Counts Most

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Colt McCoy came to Austin with much fanfare.  He was the Texas boy that chose to stay home and put on the burnt orange.  He was to carry on the legacy of quarterbacking success under Mack Brown. He was supposed to bring another national championship just as his predecessor Vince Young.  Last night in Pasadena, that storybook ending got short-circuited.

Injuries Follow McCoy's Losses

Injuries Follow McCoy's Losses

While McCoy ends his career as the winningest quarterback in NCAA history, he will be remembered most for his losses.  Oddly, most of those losses included injuries to McCoy.

During his freshman year, McCoy suffered a “stinger” in his shoulder during a huge upset loss to Kansas State.  Later that season during a deplorable showing against A&M, he bowed out late with another “stinger”, this time to his neck.  In 2007, McCoy was injured again in another huge blowout upset loss to Kansas State at home.  This time a reported concussion and pain in his arm.  McCoy returned as the wounded lion the following week with his bicep bandaged up in a loss to Oklahoma.

McCoy just always seemed to get injured when the chips were on the line.

Then last night, another big game.  Another major obstacle in front of him.  A chance for glory.  Another injury.  This one cost his team the BCS.

While I want to believe the wonderful “pushed out” press release stories of what happened in that locker room in Pasadena last night, as beautifully detailed by Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel, I was always taught not to buy into fairytales.  The reality is that Colt McCoy started in another big game and he went down with another injury that cannot be detected by a medical physician.  The “stinger” is really the only injury you can fake.  Its an injury that is based on the word of the player.

Now I am not here to call out McCoy as a faker.  He very well may have been truly injured each of these times.  The motive here is to point out that when pressure game situations arose, it was these games where McCoy had a penchant for injury.  It may just be coincidence, but it has to be noted.

Only Colt McCoy knows for sure.

One thing everyone can agree on is that if that quarterback last night for the Texas Longhorns was Tim Tebow, we wouldn’t be hearing excuses that Texas lost because McCoy got knocked out of the game.  Tebow would have re-entered that game, no matter what condition he was in.  It would have taken armed security to remove him from the field.

Regardless if McCoy re-entered the game, there would have been very little difference in the result on the scoreboard.  The Alabama defensive line penetrated holes through that swiss cheese Texas offensive line with relative ease.  McCoy’s stat line would have looked very similar to what Garrett Gilbert put up on the board.

Texas has much to thank Nick Saban for his conservative play-calling.  A 17-point bullying could have easily been a 40 point blowout if Alabam decided to unleash that offense.

Crimson Tide Capture BCS Championship

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Alabama capped off a undefeated 14-0 season by defeating Texas 37-21 to capture the BCS National Championship. Bama was a unanimous number 1 in the AP Polls. They were lead by their Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram and got a little help from a arm that went dead.

Alabama weathered the storm of a couple of early mistakes amd kept the damage minimal.  Bama went for a fake punt on their first possession when it was fourth and long.  Texas could not take full advantage of this and had to settle for a field goal. To make matters worst, Texas lost their star quarterback Colt McCoy to a dead arm. It was a hit that he has taken many times but for some reason the hit made his arm have no feeling.  There was no pain.

mark-ingramYou could see from here that it was not going to be Texas night.  From there Texas got another break after they kicked off, and Alabama did not cover the kick.  Texas had another opportunity to get six but had to settle for another field goal to make it 6-0. Texas walked away wanting more, and Bama showed why they are the Champs by squashing any real momentum early in the game.

The second quarter was Bama’s quarter.  They outscored Texas 24-0. Ingram and fellow running back Trent Richardson got the running game going, and the Tide was rolling. They both scored rushing touchdowns, then they added a field goal.  It looked like it was going to be 17-6 headed to the half.

But that is when Bama’s defense came up big again. Texas attempted a shovel pass that turned into disaster.  The pass was picked off by Bama’ s defensive linemen Marcell Dareus for a 28 yard touchdown with only three seconds left. He broke two tackles and Texas had to be demoralized.

I have to give Texas credit as they came out in the second half and scored two touchdowns to make the game 24-21 with about three minutes left.  It is a credit to coach Mack Brown to keep his team up considering what happen in the first half. But it was Bama’s defense that came up big yet again.

Bama forced a fumble deep in Texas territory and covered it on the three yard line.  Ingram then bulled his was to a three yard touchdown.  Then Bama got another interception, and Richardson capped off the scoring with a two yard run.Bama’s defense held Texas to only 276 total yards when they averaged about 440 per game.

Ingram ended up with 116 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.  He was offensive game MVP.  Trent Richardson was also great as he rushed for 109 yards and two scored also.  Bama won with a total team effort on both sides of the ball.  Nick Saban had these kids buy in to all his philosophies , and it paid off.

Congratulations Crimson Tide.

Longhorns Blowout Loss Will Bring Cries For Playoff

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Let’s face it, the BCS system is broken.

The Texas Longhorns are one of the most undeserving championship game combatants in some time.  That is quite a great feat considering how often Oklahoma and Ohio State have crashed the party in recent years.  Tonight’s game will be a mismatch of great proportions and it will serve as a final statement as to why NCAA football needs a playoff system.

Texas Taints The Title

Texas Taints The Title

Texas got this opportunity simply because of their preseason ranking, not due to the quality of the football results on the field.  Texas began the season pre-ranked #2 in the polls and ended in the same spot.  Texas got beat by Nebraska, no matter what it said on the scoreboard, but the pollsters and computer rankings didn’t apply the reality we all saw on the field.

In contrast, Boise State, TCU and Cincinnati had to claw their way forward after being dismissed in the early polls.   Each of those team’s were more deserving of tonight’s matchup, as much the same for the Florida Gators.   You have to cut Cincinnati some slack on their loss, as they were reeling from their coach being stolen by Notre Dame, but the other three teams displayed championship quality football on the field in their bowl games.

A playoff is needed to ensure that the best two teams make it into the final game.  This not just for the fans, its for the players that are leaving it all out on the field.  When Alabama celebrates another national championship tonight, their title will be diminished because they never played Boise State.  The kids at both schools deserve better than how the NCAA is treating them.

Will The Tide Roll To A BCS Title?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

The BCS Championship game tonight pits two undefeated teams in the Rose Bowl. Texas will take on Alabama with the winner to be crowned National Champion.  Both teams have star players and two of the best coaches in college football.

Alabama is lead by their Heisman trophy winner, Mark Ingram.  Ingram leads a rushing attack that averaged 215.9 yards per game, good for 12th in the nation.  It will be vital to establish this ground attack so they can set up their passing game and keep the Texas defense on the defense.  Balance will be a key to victory.  Alabama will also need too pressure Texas quarterback Colt McCoy.  They have been susceptible to the big play this year.  McCoy can come up with the big play and Bama better keep those plays to a minimum.

Nick Saban will have Alabama fired up in tonights BCS Championahip game vs. Texas.

Nick Saban will have Alabama fired up in tonights BCS Championahip game vs. Texas.

The Crimson Tide also sport one the best coaches in the nation in Nick Saban.  Saban seems to squeeze the most out of his players and will have this team both prepared and motivated.  He has had time since Bama’s big SEC Championship win over Florida.  Saban will also use that momentum to keep the tide rolling.  If this game comes down to a the kicking game, Bama will fair well.  Leigh Tiffin kicked 29/33 field goals this year. Bama will hope this game will not be that close.

Texas is led by their great quarterback Colt McCoy.  McCoy finished third in the Heisman balloting to Ingram. He could use this as motivation to out play Ingram and Alabama tonight.  McCoy must manage this game smartly and limit his mistakes against a opportunistic Alabama defense.  Texas cannot afford to make mistakes, it is that easy.  Texas also sports the #1 rushing defense in the nation, only giving up a poultry 62.2 yards per game.  If they can bring that kind of defense tonight against Bama’s vaunted rushing offense, they will wind up National Champions.

Texas also has a great coach in Mack Brown. Brown has already won a National Championship at Texas and would like nothing better than to add a second.  Texas might also be a team of destiny.  They pulled out a 13-12 victory over Nebraska in the Big Eight Championship when there was one second added to the clock.  They then used that one second to their advantage as their place kicker Hunter Lawrence kicked a game winning field goal.  Lawrence is a stellar kicker converting 22/25 field goals this year.

I think that the Tide is too balanced and too good for the Longhorns.  Bama has everything working for them including talent, coaching and momentum.  I think the tide will roll to the National Championship.

Horned Frogs coach Patterson Leaps to AP coach of the year

Gary Patterson lead TCU to a perfect 12-0 as he took home AP caoch of the year

Lets hear it for Gary Patterson  for what he has accomplished at Texas Christian University. On Wednesday, Patterson was awarded a much deserved AP coach of the year. Patterson edged out Brian Kelly by receiving  21 first place votes  Kelly’s 19. He led TCU to a perfect 12-0 season this year and has them with a date in the Fiesta Bowl against fellow unbeaten Boise State. It is TCU’s first BCS appearance in the history of the program ,and their best season in 70 years. Quite a accomplishment for one of the lesser known schools in Division 1 college football.

TCU dominated opponents all year long. Nine of their twelve victories were by a astounding 25 or more points. When they got you down, they did not let up for even one second. That is a true sign of great coaching which is why he won this award. It is great to see a team like TCU recognized among the traditionally elite in college football. I find it a very refreshing change for college football.

Patterson has been at TCU for nine seasons and has amassed a 85-27 record. In addition to a that impressive accomplishment, he has guided TCU to 11 or more victories in five of the last seven seasons. So you can see this season is no fluke, and he has done a consistent job for this football program. He has TCU going n the right direction and wants them to be mentioned as one of the elite teams in college football year after year.

TCU  just missed out on playing for the BCS National Championship as Texas squeaked by Nebraska to end their season. It is a shame, because I think they had a real good chance to knock off Alabama and win the National Championship. What a story that would of been. The Horned Frogs, National Champions! Anyway, Congratulations to Gary Patterson and TCU.

College Bowl Game Predictions

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

BSCThe college bowl schedule kicks off today with two opening games on the schedule as Wyoming meets Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl and Central Florida hooks up with Rutgers in the St. Petersburg Bowl.   College football fans will be treated to 34 games over 20 days culminating with Alabama and Texas deciding this year’s national champions.

This year’s matchups pair what appear to be some with three teams favored by double-digit spreads and twelve team favored by a touchdown or more.  While Vegas is seeing a lot of mismatches, there appears to be some great upsets brewing.   I am projecting right now seven underdogs achieving outright victories and sixteen underdogs covering the spread.

My biggest underdog covers include SMU, Boston College, Northwestern, East Carolina and Boise State.  My biggest underdog outright victories are Texas A&M and Stanford.

Bowl Matchup Spread Winner Cover
New Mexico Bowl Wyoming vs. Fresno State Fresno State by 11 Fresno State Fresno State
St. Petersburg Bowl Central Florida vs. Rutgers EVEN Central Florida Central Florida
New Orleans Bowl Middle Tenn St vs.Southern Miss Southern Miss by 4 Southern Miss Middle Tenn St

Music City Bowl Kentucky vs. Clemson Clemson by 7½ Clemson Clemson
Independence Bowl Texas A&M vs. Georgia Georgia by 7 Texas A&M Texas A&M
Eagle Bank Bowl UCLA vs. Temple EVEN Temple Temple

Humanitarian Bowl Bowling Green vs. Idaho Bowling Green by 2 Bowling Green Bowling Green
Holiday Bowl Nebraska vs. Arizona Arizona by 1½ Nebraska Nebraska
Armed Forces Bowl Air Force vs. Houston Houston by 4½ Air Force Air Force
Sun Bowl Stanford vs. Oklahoma Oklahoma by 8 Stanford Stanford

Gator Bowl Florida State vs. West Virginia West Virginia by 3 West Virginia West Virginia
Rose Bowl Ohio State vs. Oregon Oregon by 3½ Oregon Oregon
Sugar Bowl Cincinnati vs. Florida Florida by 11 Florida Florida
International Bowl Northern Illinois vs. South Florida South Florida by 7 South Florida South Florida
Papa John’s Bowl Connecticut vs. South Carolina South Carolina by 4½ Connecticut Connecticut
Cotton Bowl Mississippi vs. Oklahoma State Mississippi by 3 Oklahoma State Oklahoma State
Liberty Bowl Arkansas vs. East Carolina Arkansas by 8 Arkansas East Carolina
Alamo Bowl Michigan State vs. Texas Tech Texas Tech by 8 Texas Tech Texas Tech
Fiesta Bowl Boise State vs. TCU TCU by 7 TCU Boise State
Orange Bowl Iowa vs. Georgia Tech Georgia Tech by 4 Georgia Tech Iowa
Gmac Bowl Troy vs. Central Michigan Central Michigan by 3 Central Michigan Central Michigan
BCS Championship Texas vs. Alabama Alabama by 5 Alabama Alabama

Looking at conference performance, here’s how I see it playing out:

Bowl Matchup
Atlantic Coast 4-3
Big East 4-2
Big Ten 2-4
Big 12 4-4
C-USA 2-4
Mountain West 4-1
Pac-10 3-4
Southeastern 4-6
Western Athletic 2-2

The SEC might be the power conference, but they got some unfavorable matchup.  I think the Big 12 and Big East are going to surprise some opponents.  The Mountain West is going to do some damage and really stoke the argument that they deserve an automatic BCS invite.

As for the National Championship game, I am seeing a major blowout.  Given Texas’ performance against ranked opponents and closing out its season on some very poor play, this just seems like a mismatch of grand proportion.  TCU and Cincinnati were much more deserving of a spot in the Championship Game and Alabama is going to apply a major smackdown that will likely drop Colt McCoy’s NFL stock drop tremendously when he loses the game single-handedly.

Overall, this bowl season looks to be exciting.  We have a lot of underdogs with solid shots at upsets which should make the next 20 days enjoyable for all to watch.

College Bowl season kicks off Saturday

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The College football bowl season kicks off Saturday with Fresno  St. taking on Wyoming in the New Mexico Bowl and Rutgers taking on Central Florida in the St Petersburg Bowl and ends with the BCS National Championship game  between Texas and Alabama January 7. In between there are some intriguing match ups of teams and last games of individuals.

Can Mark Ingram end the bowl seson with a title?

Can Mark Ingram end the bowl seson with a title?

While I am in favor of a College playoff system, I do appreciate the Bowl season because of how much I love college football. The teams always give their best effort, and there has been so many memorable  games because of this.

One of the most intriguing match up of teams is in the Fiesta Bowl January 4 as it pits two unbeaten teams in Boise St. and TCU. I am glad the bowl committee went this way as it has two teams that are not among the elite facing each other and one stays unbeaten. These two teams could of easily been playing Alabama for the National Championship if they had a playoff.  I think TCU would  give Bama all they could handle in particular.

The greatest college football player ever will be playing his last game. Tim Tebow and his Florida Gators will be taking on Cincinnati January 1st in the Sugar Bowl. This  your last chance to see the Great Gator quarterback ,and I am sure he will go out with a show to remember. Don’t miss it. How will Cincinnati play with the adversity of their head coach Brian Kelly deserting them and their unbeaten season is a great underlining story.

Bobby Bowden will be coaching his last college game for Florida St. on January 1st in the Gator Bowl against West Virginia. Can he go out a winner? It will be weird not to se him on the sidelines for the Seminoles.

As you can see, the Bowl season has a lot of  interesting and intriguing match ups that will keep you tuned in from start to finish. It cumulates with the great match up for the title between Texas and Alabama.  Let the Bowl Season Begin!

Ingram gives Alabama their first Heisman trophy

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Mark Ingram won the

This is the apropriate pose for Mark Ingram.

This is the apropriate pose for Mark Ingram.

Heisman trophy Saturday night and in doing so gave Alabama their first winner ever. Ingram edged out Toby Gerhart by a mere 28 points in the closet race ever. Ingram received 227 first place votes compared to 222 for Gerhart. The final count was 1304 votes for Ingram and 1276 votes for Gerhart.

Ingram was tarried eyed and overwhelmed with the honor of being in the same class as past Heisman winners. He thanked everyone from his mother and father to even his teachers. He carried himself with class and will represent the trophy and its company with the same. I love college football and am glad that the right person won the trophy this year.

Ingram grew up in the tough neighborhood of Flint Michigan. It was in this environment growing up that taught him to overcome any obstacles and believe in yourself that anything is possible. Ingram is only a Sophomore and has two more years left to get even better. Will he become a two time Heisamn winner and join the only other two time winner, Archie Griffin? It is a great stroyline for the next college foot ball season.

Ingram and his Alabama teammates still have some unfinished business to attend to, They have a date with Texas on January 7 in the Rose Bowl for the National Championship. Will it come up roses for Alabama and Ingram? It would seem that the momentum from the Heisman is a good omen and prelude to this possibility. I can’t wait for him to show off his versatile skills in this game. We will see if the National Championship trophy is crimson in color and feel as well.

And The Heisman Trophy Goes To Mark Ingram

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
Will this pose become a reality for Mark Ingram

Will this pose become a reality for Mark Ingram

The Heisman trophy will be awarded this Saturday, and if  had a vote it would go to Alabama’s running back, Mark Ingram. Ingram had a great season on the number one ranked Crimson Tide.

He came up big time and time again and showed why he was voted SEC’s offensive player of the year by the Associated Press.  He has one more game left this year, and it comes against Texas and their Heisman candidate Colt McCoy.

I have no doubt that he will shine and bring Bama another National Championship. My reasoning does not come without merit.

Ingram gained 1542 and averaged a consistent 118.6 yards per game. He also caught 30 passes for a additional 322 yards and three touchdowns. His numbers could have been a lot greater, but he sat out much of three Alabama blowouts.  Ingram rushed for 180 yards against Virginia Tech, 172 against Mississippi and another 144 against LSU. Those three schools are pretty good teams to come up big against.

He saved his most impressive performance for the biggest stage, the Sec championship. With the chance for a shot to become NCAA champion on the line, Ingram rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught 2 passes for 76 yards. It was his screen catch for 69 yards that set up a touchdown and demoralized the top ranked Florida Gators. His numbers speak volumes ,and he is a game changing player.

Ingram is a big time player from a big time school. I think he deserves the Heisman trophy on Saturday before he struts his stuff in the title game against Texas. It is finally the time for an Alabama player to earn the distinction of being college football’s best player.

Texas Undeserving of BCS Title Game, Whose To Blame?

Sunday, December 6th, 2009
Colt McCoy Steers An Undesjavascript:;erving Texas To BCS Title Game

Colt McCoy Steers An Undeserving Texas To BCS Title Game

Very few college football fans will disagree that Texas University is questionable at best of deserving the opportunity to play in the BCS National Championship title game.  Talk with a handful of people, you’ll hear backing for TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State consistently in the conversation.  With 3 other undefeated teams on the outside looking in, the calls for a playoff system are sure to blow up at the end of this college football season.

But is the BCS system really to blame?

In actuality, the BCS system is just a mathematical model…nothing more.  It combines data inputs from various polls, both human and computer, to give weight to multiple voices in the debate.  Its democracy in action.  The only drawback is the included conferences / at-large bid issues that determine who plays, which doesn’t impact the final two choices at all.

People are up in arms once again that perhaps the wrong teams are playing in the final game.  The BCS is not to blame, it is the people casting votes in the polls and the inappropriate weight being applied to certain conferences.  The story behind Texas getting into this title game details the problem.

Texas began the season rated #2 in both the coaches poll and AP poll.  Alabama leapfrogged Texas in the AP poll during week 6 after a dominating victory over Ole Miss, but it maintained the #3 spot until the final poll.   Those voting in these polls maintained a standard that you don’t drop until you are beaten, regardless of schedule or opponent.  And this rang extremely true for Texas.

The first signs of trouble in Austin showed up in Game 3, when Texas got outplayed on the field but took the victory on the scoreboard against Texas Tech.  Next up was the pathetic showing against an Oklahoma squad which lost its Heisman Trophy winning quarterback early in the first quarter.  Then came the Thanksgiving Night embarrassment against Texas A&M where the #3 defense in NCAA football was lit up for 532 yards.  Finally, they win a nail-biter against Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship game while displaying embarrassing clock management on the game-winning drive.

Despite the evident lackluster results on the field, none of the voters deemed it necessary to drop Texas a peg when teams like TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State racked up impressive performances one after another.  In fact, two AP voters and four Coaches poll voters still believe Texas is the best team in the country.   These voters disregarded what was seen on the field and cast their vote based solely on the fact Texas escaped with a victory.   Due to this short-sightedness, we are robbed of seeing a more fitting national championship game.

More concerning is that Texas got a pass on a weak schedule.  Loading its schedule with patsies like Louisiana-Monroe, Wyoming and UTEP, all of which failed to post winning records in second-tier conferences.  Its toughest non-conference foe was UCF, which is not saying much.  As for the Big 12 conference this year, calling it a down year is being nice.

On the other hand, TCU posted impressive victories over BYU and Utah, Boise State scored a big victory over Oregon and Cincinnati has shown mettle all year long with tremendous 4th quarter performances.

So in the end, it is not the BCS that is to blame, it is the people filling out the polls.  The BCS just computes what the voters submit.  And we can blame the six people that voted Texas #1 in the two human polls from robbing TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise State, whom on their merits earned the right to play in the big game much more than Texas with their performance on the field.

They just didn’t get the proper recognition in the preseason polls as Texas did and are now being punished for it.
